Mayor Irene Williams

Mayor Irene Williams was born in Griekwastad on 27 October 1970. She began her education at Finch Primary School in Lime Acres (up to Grade 7), then continued at Die Kuil Primary in Danielskuil (Grade 8–9), and completed her high school at William Prescod in Kimberley, matriculating in 1990.

She started her working career in retail as a cashier at Pep Stores Lime Acres, where she also completed a 1-year retail course through UNISA. Later, she secured a permanent position at PPC Lime as a Lab Tester.

Mayor Irene has held several leadership roles. She is the Chairperson of the David Binang branch of the ANC and was previously the Secretary of the NUM PPC branch. Her political journey began in 2016 as a Ward Councillor (Ward 4), re-elected in 2021 in Ward 5, and elected Mayor. She also serves as the Regional Treasurer of the Women's League.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Presides over executive committee meetings.
  • Performs ceremonial duties and executes delegated powers from the council.
  • Provides oversight over administration and council matters.
  • Offers leadership by promoting governance and positive relationships.
  • Guides the budget process and community priorities.
  • Leads local campaigns and programs.
  • Ensures delivery of basic services to the community.

Mayor Irene also serves on the Provincial Executive Committee of SALGA and chairs the Institutional, Capabilities, and Resilience Committee at the provincial level. She is currently furthering her studies in Public Administration.

Personal Life & Beliefs

Passionate about people, Mayor Irene is known for her compassion, fairness, and strong belief in equality and dignity for all. Outside of work, she enjoys cooking, baking, and writing poetry.
